Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SB)

Udupi, Jun 16: District administration will take measures to create public awareness on spread of malaria and precautionary measures to control the same through SMS, said deputy commissioner (DC) P Hemalatha on Monday June 15.

She was presiding over the district-level meeting of Malaria Coordination Committee held here at the auditorium of DC’s office. She said that urban areas record more number of malaria cases compared to the rural areas. The stagnation of water at the construction sites is one of the prime breeding grounds for the mosquitoes, she said.

She instructed the municipal officials to identify buildings under construction in the town limits and take measures to control water stagnation. The officials were also asked to serve notices to the erring building owners and also undertake fogging. Measures against water stagnation in the tyres stored at some areas in the town needs to be taken.

Stating that the effluents from hotels in the town too contribute to the spread of malaria, Hemalatha said that there is a need to chalk out programmes whereby awareness is created among the hotel staff. There is also a need to create awareness among school children on spread of malaria and thereby enlighten parents, Hemalatha instructed the officials of health department.

District malaria officer Dr Seetharam Shetty and district health and family welfare officer Dr M R Nayak were present.
