Mangalore, Jun 29: Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police Dr Subrahmanyeshwar Rao presided a district level grievances redressal meeting for the people belonging to scheduled castes and tribes on Sunday June 28 here. A number of complaints were made by people against the partisan treatment of the policemen.

State unit president of Dr B R Ambedkar Foundation Shivappa Rekendaguttu complained that investigations into the murder-attempt on dalit leader Shivappa Bangera in 2003 in the city are not held transparently. No accused have been arrested. The daughter of Shivappa Bangera’s niece, who was at the spot, was not questioned. The policemen are about to file 'C' report, claiming that in this case, they have failed to find out the culprits, he explained.

Shivappa said, in another case, Putta, a dalit from Venur, was fired at by a man named Janu Poojary, a neighbourer, because of land dispute. Even though three bullets were embedded in Putta's body, the policemen registered the case as 'accidental firing'. No compensation has been received and the policemen are trying to close the case, he said. The SP contacted Beltangady circle inspector immediately over phone and promised to provide justice to the family.

The SP promised him that he would order for a fresh investigation, if more information or new witnesses are available in the case.

About the non-payment of compensation upon the death of Satish, a temporary worker of Mescom due to electrocution on duty, the SP promised to take up with Mescom.

Marati Seva Sangh president M A Nayak complained that a man named Sadanand Nayak had illegally entered a house belonging to scheduled community and got the house vacated through forest department employees. Even after the deputy commissioner of the district reported that the land belongs to the dalits, the concerned have not got their property back, he said. The SP said he would get reports on the issue and find out what can be done.

Cases of the policemen's failure to take action against illicit liquor traders and non-receipt of post mortem report on the death of Raju Gowda, working in the plantation of former minister Nagaraj Shetty were also heard.

Bring these SCs and STs at par with other section of society and give them equal social and religious status, bring them to the mainstream of the society. Their porblems shall be solved automatically. Do we have social will? Laws should be enacted to give them equal social and religious rights as upper caste populate. For this we may have to re write our own sacred scriptures. Are we prepared for this exercise? A million dollar question? Has any one got any answer to my question??
