Chikmagalur: ‘No Backing out on Gundya, Tadadi Power Projects’

Daijiworld Media Network – Chikmagalur (SB)

Chikmagalur, Jun 30: The Tadadi and Gundya project planned to generate power in the state will not be shelved at any cost, said energy minister K S Eshwarappa.

Addressing media persons he said that the opposition by certain environmentalists to these projects has been taken into consideration. First round of discussion in this regard has been held and concerned have been convinced about certain facts and practical implications. There is no going back as far as these two projects are concerned, he clarified.

Coming down heavily on the opposition raised by some environmentalists who were not genuine, he observed that they were trying to impose their opinion through some mediators and added that earlier too few environmentalists led by litterateur the late Shivram Karanth opposed Sharavati and Kali power projects. “If under pressure the two projects were dropped, we would have been now reeling under grave power crisis,” he said.

Accepting the fact that power generation has come down in the state, Eshwarappa said that the low rainfall compared to last year has been the reason for power crisis. But, it is expected to rain heavily within next 15 days and people need not be fearful of power shortage, he assured. If the centre supplies power as per state’s requirement, we will be able bail out ourselves from lot of existing problems, he said.

The cost is about 14 to 18 cr/mw as per CERC. I agree the initial capital cost is high but you would not be buying and feeding coal or gas every day and destroying ecology. Even the maintenance is neglible as well. The problem however, is the politicians and bureacrats cannot have periodic earnings. Hence the lack of initiative.

Mr Balakrishan Shetty ,Renewable energy is very expensive. To generate 1MW of solar energy an investment of 25 crores is required.Whereas coal-based thermal power plant can be setup with just 3-4 crores/MW.

Why is the Power Minister not giving more emphasis on renewable energy. The world today is exploring massive generation of power from solar and other renewable sources and are decommissioning coal fired power plants. Why are these Ministers taking the coutry backwards at the cost of environmental safeguards. The larger crisis today is water and not power. Burning coal is one of the major causes for water shortage.
