Manipal: 'Prevention of self-harm' suicide prevention and awareness held at MCON

Manipal, Sept 10: Department of Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, MCON organised a number of activities to sensitise the general public and youth regarding causes, myths and prevention of suicide.

One of the leading causes of death globally, Sept 10 is observed as 'World Suicide Prevention Day'.

MCON observed the awareness programme through a street play by the second year PBB.Sc nursing students near Tiger Circle.

Asha Nayak, assist professor, MCON welcomed the audience for the street play and introduced the theme for this year, “Working together to Prevent Suicide”.

To educate the high-risk group, the youth, a health awareness programme, through a role play by the second year PBB.Sc nursing students was also conducted at Manipal Junior College, Manipal

A total of 165 pre-university students along with their teachers attended this programme.

Umapathi, lecturer, MJC welcomed the gathering, and Flavia Noronha, lecturer, MCON, introduced the theme.

A workshop on “Prevention of Self-harm” was organised on tue by Department of Student Affairs, (DSA) MAHE in association with Department of Psychiatric Nursing, MCON, MAHE, for the students of MAHE.

Dr Poornima Baliga, pro-vice chancellor was the chief guest and Dr Narayana Sabhahit, registrar, MAHE the guest of honour.

Dr Poornima Baliga spoke on the incidence of suicide cases globally (11.4%) with Sikkim (37%) having three times the global average cases of suicide. She also emphasised the importance of expressing bottled feelings and the need to recognise people around us who show early warning signs.

Dr Tessy Treesa Jose, Professor and HoD, psychiatric nursing, MCON, gave an overview of the workshop and introduced the theme for WSPD – 2019.

Dr Samir Praharaj, professor and HoD, Praveen Jain, assistant professor, psychiatry department, KMC, Renjulal, assistant professor, MCON and Dr Sharmila, life coach and mentor were the resource persons. Dr Binil V assistant professor, MCON delivered the vote of thanks.

Asha K Nayak and Savitha, assist. professors, MCON, gave a health talk show on a television channel.
