Mangaluru, Sep 28: Staff of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have arrested two persons on the charge of stealing mobile phones and hand bags of railway passengers. They have recovered three mobile phones and Rs 10,500 in cash from the accused.

The persons taken into custody happen to be Shafiq and C P Siyad from Kannur, Kerala.

A passenger, Arpit Alexander, who travelled to Kota from Thiruvananthapuram by Thiruvananthapuram - Hazarat Nizamuddin Express train, had complained to the RPF here that belongings of passengers were being stolen in the said train. Travelling ticket examiner Gajanan Bhat, who registered the case, asked RPF assistant sub-inspector K A Cute and constable Karunakar, to investigate. The RPF sub-inspector, during the checking online from Karwar, found that two young men were moving inside the train and returning to general compartments. Senapur railway station master was instructed to take these youth into custody from Senapur crossing in Udupi district.

One of the two was questioned at Senapur and the mobile phones stolen from Alexander was found from his possession. The other was taken into custody from Bhatkal and two mobile phones and cash were found from his possession. It was found that they had also stolen three mobile phones and handbag containing cash belonging to T K Tangan who was travelling by air-conditioned coach of the said train. The stolen items were returned to true owners. Shafiq has been handed over Mangaluru police while Siyad is in the custody of Manipal police.
