Beltangady: DC assures to clear sand from flood-hit agricultural fields

Beletangady, Oct 5: Deputy commissioner (DC) of Dakshina Kannada district, Sindhu B Rupesh, undertook surprise visit to flood-ravaged areas in the taluk like Kolli Daddu, Ganesh Nagar, Didupe, Kajake Kukkavu, Charmadi, Hosmath etc on Friday October 4.

On this occasion, affected people requested her to clear the silt that has accumulated in fields due to floods, and to disburse compensation in respect of crops destroyed by rotting disease.

Speaking to media representatives at travellers bungalow here thereafter, she said that steps are being taken to remove sand that has accumulated in agricultural fields under the supervision of respective gram panchayats. She clarified that silt from rivers cannot be removed now because of legal hitch. "22 spots have been identified to stock sand in the district and tender process for 12 of them has been undertaken. She also said that sand blocks are being checked.

She informed that 53 families are being shifted on account of damage due to floods and landslides. Compensation would be disbursed as per the National Disaster Relief Fund model and that about 1,200 applications have been received from the taluk.

The DC said that maximum compensation has been provided in case of houses which have suffered damages and that some areas have been identified for distribution of house sites. She said that sites would be distributed soon, and that wherever there is own space, houses can be built there.

Zilla panchayat chief executive officer, Dr R Sevamani, tahsildar, Ganapati Shastri, taluk panchayat executive officer, K E Jayaram, local panchayat presidents and others were present.
