Bengaluru, Oct 9: Congress high command is expected to bring curtains down on all developments relating to choosing of an opposition leader in the state assembly on Wednesday October 9. Siddaramaiah, who is backed by a strong faction of MLAs, has stuck to his demand for the said post, while the 'original' Congressmen are hell-bent on wresting the seat from Siddaramaiah.

The high command has listened to arguments put forth by both the sides and people are curious to know about the final result. The high command has planned to choose the new opposition leader, leader of the Congress legislature party, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, deputy leaders of the opposition in both houses of the legislature, as well as the chief whip. Leaders expect the names to be announced by Wednesday evening.

The original, loyal Congressmen feel that Siddaramaiah, who has already enjoyed power as chief minister of the state, did not put in efforts to build the party's organization when in power. They complain that he has strengthened a faction of his loyalists and with their support, has been imposing his decisions on the party. They feel that this style of functioning is harmful for the party's interests. They also insist that Siddaramaiah was responsible for the downfall of the previous coalition government, because of his lackadaisical attitude towards the coalition partner, JD(S). They have pointed out that many of those who quit the party at a critical moment are close to Siddaramaiah. They feel that even if the power is vested with him again, there is no guarantee that Siddaramaiah will take everyone including his opponents along and strengthen the party.

In contrast, Siddaramaiah faction says that Siddaramaiah is the only leader with tall stature and charisma spread all over the state. This faction has told the high command that the party can hope to floor the BJP only if Siddaramaiah is made the opposition leader. As many as 46 legislators of the party have signed a request supporting Siddaramaiah, it is said. If the high command turns angry against this pressure tactic, the letter itself might turn the tables on Siddaramaiah, sources feel.
