Mangalore: City Congress Veteran Francis D’Souza Passes Away

Mangalore, Jul 30:
Veteran Congress leader sixty-year-old Francis D’Souza passed away here in city on Monday July 27 night. He was undergoing treatment at the KMC hospital here.

Francis, former municipal corporator from Attavar ward and former president, health and standing committee was elected twice to municipal body between 1980 and 1992. He was an active party worker of Block Congress Committee and served as its treasurer since 1964.

A social activist known for his humanitarian deeds, his neighbours remember the help offered by him during a major flood that hit Attavar locality twice in 1970. On both the occasions, he gave shelter to the flood victims in his house apart from providing food and clothing.

He has further contributed significantly as member of peace committee, in order to promote peace and harmony in the society. He had also served as member of Milagres Parish Council and its financial committee besides serving as president of Monti Saibin Samiti for consecutive five years.

Francis is survived by his wife Rita D’Souza, eighty two-year old mother Seraphine D’Souza and six children including Catholic Sabha diocesan president Deepak D’Souza. The funeral will be held at Milagres Church on Thursday July 30 at 4.00 pm.
 
Francis was honoured by Krishna Janmashtami Samiti, Attavar and Ganeshotsav Samiti, Attavar during the installation ceremony of temple deity Sri Umamaheshwari at Attavar for all the support he provided for the programmes by the committees.
 
Union law minister M Veerappa Moily, former union ministers and Rajya Sabha members Oscar Fernandes and B Janardan Poojary, former state minister and MLA B Ramanath Rai, District Congress Committee vice-president Ivan D’Souza, MLAs K Abhayachandra Jain, Vasant Bangera and U T Khader, offered condolences to the bereaved family of Francis D’Souza.
