Mangalore, Aug 5:  In a joint initiative undertaken by the local parish and Rotary Club Mangalore Downtown, saplings of mahogany, jack, wild jack and badam were planted in the five-acres of land belonging to Ranipura church recently.

This church is situated at a distance of 15 kms south-east of the city, on the other side the Netravati river, and is surrounded by Eliarpadav, Fajir, Panir, Nityadar Nagar and Permannur parishes.   The church commands a magnificent view of the Netravathi valley, and of the port and the city of Mangalore.

Around 350 parishioners enthusiastically participated in the programme. The planting of five acres was completed in about an hour, which is a record by itself. Planting of so many saplings in a single initiative is very rare phenomenon now-a-days, because of the rapid urbanization. Men and women of all ages including children, participated in planting the saplings. They were helped by Anil D’Souza, vice-president of the Pastoral Council, gurkars and council members headed by Fr Valerian Menezes, the parish priest.

The project took shape with the joint initiative of the parish and  Rotary Club of Mangalore Downtown. Rtn Rohan Colaco.  Rtn Ejanath Dandakery, Rtn Ganapathy Shenoy and his family and Rtn Anil Baliga participated in the project. They were present at the time of planting the saplings and extended help to the parishioners.

The church also has a Kannada medium school in its premises that caters to the needs of the economically backward people of the surrounding areas. The church has plans to build a computer lab with around five computers to impart basic computer knowledge to the students. It also has plans to build toilets for the 500 students studying in the school, as the available infrastructure is not up to the mark.

The church has asked the interested donors to contact the parish priest at 0824-2469546 (menezesvm@hotmail.com; or the correspondent, Ranipura Hr Pry School, Munnur PO; 575 017, India ) or Rohan Colaco at 9448123047.
