Mangalore, Aug 20: Burkha represents our culture and we wear one to protect our modesty, said Ruksana, president, district Girls Islamic Organisation in a protest organized by Dakshina Kannada Students Federation (DKSF) in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Thursday, August 20.

Addressing the protestors, Ruksana said that students should come together to demand justice for the college student Aysha Asmin, who was barred from attending classes for wearing a head scarf in SVS College in Bantwal. Indian culture gives utmost respect to women fro time immemorial, which is evident from the fact that most of the Indian rivers are named after women.

The culture of torturing women is of recent origin which she said is increasing by the day. We will not allow our fundamental rights to be curbed, she said.

Students from various colleges from across the district participated in the protest. Students were seen holding placards with slogans such as `Burkha is our culture, nudity is western culture’ and `We respect our culture’ among others.

Harsharaj, student from St Aloysius College, Muhammad Saqir, convener, of DKSF, Nisar Ahmed and district organizor of Students Islamic Organization too spoke on the occasion.

This Burkha episode is going too far, the district govt. should not allow Burkha''s inside any college whether SVS or Manipal, this is very uncomfortable for majority of the students, and there is a saying in Saudi Arabia, it is the majority say, so even non muslims are supposed to wear burkha when going out, so here too, majority dont like burkha''s in educational insitutions, with due respect for modesty they can wear head Scarf, with Salwar Kameez, this picture of burkha girls is just dragging a religious issue, its almost like this make a mess or start a fire, then blame all other organistaions like RSS, that has been the recent problem in the undivided districts, hope religion doesn''t come into education.

Anand, If you happened to go to Manipal, you will see number of Students from various parts the world, Muslims female students are wearing scarf which Manipal University have no problem at all. You may know that Manipal Univeristy is belongs to Konkanas similar to SVS. SVS college is backed by RSS and the student union president Bharat is BD member.

Some time back there was a RSS Camp(Shibira) that was attended by College management and they have permitted for that. The scarf issue is not from college management but from RSS to the management then to the poor lady Aysha. I dont think there any thing wrong wearing scarf or without scarf. Let the Principal ban the students belongs to RSS/VHP/BD/ABVP marking long red Nama on thier forhead a mark of fake Nationalist.

CULTURE SHOULD BE FOLLOWED INSIDE THE HOUSE. CULTURE SHOULD NOT DISTURB HARMONY & PEACE OF THE SOCIETY. MR. MAYYA IS 100% RIGHT. COLLEGE RULES SHOULD BE FOLLOWED BY EACH STUDENT IRRESPECTIVE OF RELIGION & THEIR CULTURE. JAI HO SVS & MR.MAYYA.

Recently, the cultured and literate city of Mangalore is turning like a launching pad for religious based frictions. It might be attacking the worships halls of the minority, or creating a big issue out of simple matters like dress code. It is high time to put an end to this explosive issues, which will divide the city farther.

This issue is getting blown out of proportion and does not require so much media coverage. This simple issue is getting dragged into politics and religious difference. If any student does not wish to follow the code of conduct set by a educational institution, then he or she is free to join the institution of her/his choice or the institution that is run by one''s own religion or community.

Come on, we need to collectively fight against poverty and economic development issues rather than fighting on burkhas and jeans, miniskirts and shorts. Religion and one''s religious beliefs is to be treated as personal and should not get dragged into each and every thing. It is very unfortunate that one single community finds the problems in everything and every where. We are in 21st century and need to march forward with the modern world in creating a peaceful place for every one to live together and not backward due to our ambiguity in certian beliefs.

The religion does not impose complete Burkha. Hello Dr. Ronald, How you know that religion does impose complete Burkha. The catholic nuns wearing gown and head covered are not imposed by your religion? If you do not know about the Islam do not comment unnecessarily.

Dressing is choice of individual wheter you wear shorts in your dispensary or full trouser. People will judge what kind of decency or modesty you maintain. Do not forget Burkha is also of symbol of modesty not what you claim.

The religion does not impose complete Burkha. The complete Burkha has been imposed by men to suppress the freedom of their women and to control them. It is a shame to modern societies that tolerate this subjection of women. A woman can fully develop her potentials only if she is free from this manipulation and has equal rights in all areas. Only free men and women build a free, equal, and prosperous society.

What is the difference between culture and religion when it comes to burkhas. Burkhas are worn all around the world by muslim women, so it becomes one culture, I can''t believe it. Why tell such a lie?

Burkha is part of the religion and a way of life for muslim women which is evident all over the world. If it is part of Indian culture then all girls should wear burkha whether muslim, hindus, christians, sikhs as it will protect their modesty. Are the women listening?

The present situation with the Scarf issue is very well depicted in one of the placards held in one of the photographs. If you wear scarf that is against the rules and is like subduing women but if you dress scantily and dance or walk on the ramp you are miss world!!!! How sad but true???

It has become a daily routine to go on strikes . we should think sensible before going on a protest . there is nothing wrong in maitaining common dress code . perhaps students should go to college with the sole intention to study than to follow their religion . they get plenty of time to pratice their religion at home

I request all Muslim women students to wear a modest & loose Salwar Khameez and cover their head & face with Dupatta. In the earlier years Muslim women students were not wearing a totally covered Burkha which makes them a prominent women among others.

Similarly a Hindu man applying a very scary broad & long red Tilak on their forehead makes them look prominent from others. There is always going to be a tit for a tat which will reach us nowhere other than destructions & disturbance for all.

I request all our loving Mangalorean brothers & sisters to show love & regards for other’s religion because for every one their religion is precious to them. Let us all live in Peace. Jai Kudla/M’lore/Maikala/Mangalapuram!
