Mangaluru: Dayanand seeks legislators support to include Tulu in eighth schedule

Mangaluru, Nov 25: Newly appointed president of Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, Dayanand Kattalsar, urged the legislators from the district to work to get nod from all the MLAs from the state for the proposal to bring Tulu under the eighth schedule of the constitution.

He was speaking after taking over charge along with other members of the academy at Tulu Bhavan here on Sunday November 24. "As the same party is ruling the state and centre, this task has become easier. As the president of the academy, I will also try my best. Tulu language, which has both the script and calendar, is fit to get this recognition," he felt.

Kattalsar said that chief minister B S Yediyurappa had earlier promised to bring Tulu under the eighth schedule if he became the chief minister. "As he is the chief minister now, I am sure that after the bypoll, he will keep his words," he stated. He also called upon the people of Tulunadu to mention their language as Tulu as national census is expected to be undertaken within a year from now.

He wanted to finish pending work in Tulu Bhavan at the earliest, and promised to provide the hall to people connected with art at a rent that will be lower than the Towm Hall.

MLA Umanth Kotian, noted that 40 percent of Tulu Bhavan work is pending and it will need three to four crore rupees more to finish. He promised to try to get this fund from the government.

MLA Rajesh Naik, zilla panchayat president, Meenakshi Shantigdu, RSS leader, Kalladka Prahakar Bhat, Beary Sahitya Academy president, Rahi Uchil, former Tulu Academy president, Vaman Nandavar, Kannada Sajitya Parishad district president, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and members of the academy were present. On this occasion seven books which during the previous term of the academy were released.
