Udupi, Aug 31: “If a man is passionate about his work and has a vision, then he can do wonders,” said M V Kamath, honorary director, Manipal Institute of Communication.

He was speaking at the valedictory ceremony of the four-day Indo-Japan Emergency Relief Training programme held at Manipal University building, here on Saturday August 29. He said that similar programme should be conducted in every country to ensure support during disasters. He complimented the organizers for pioneering such an event involving participants from different disciplines.
 

Experts from various fields spoke on their experiences during the deliberations on all four days. Dr Chandan Ghosh, National Institute of Disaster Management, New Delhi, delivered lecture, on disaster management scenario in Indian context and retrofitting of hospital building and earthquake emergencies.
 
Dr Sameera Suri of GOARN, Geneva, spoke on global outbreak alert and response network; nine years of international collaboration for outbreak response and Dr Pradeepkumar Bardhan of GOARN, Bangladesh, spoke on cholera epidemic control in Zimbabwe 2009. While, Dr Shekhar, NIMHANS, Bangalore spoke on psychosocial rehabilitation after disaster, Dr Kashima of Okayama University, Japan spoke on communication and information technology for disaster management and Dr Gorge G from UNICEF spoke on UNICEF core commitment for children during emergencies.
 
The training programme also had demonstration on basic life support during emergency. Dr M S Kamath, Dr Ramachandra Kamath, Dr Aarti Deshmukh and Dr Veeravagu Nithian from Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA) Japan were present. The programme was organized by Manipal University jointly with AMDA and Okayama University, Japan.
