Mangalore, Sep 1: Dharmaraj, engineering consultant and advisor for the infrastructure development committee of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), agreed to change the plans for road work on a particular stretch, based on the suggestions by citizens given at ‘Together for a Cause—Evergreen Kudla’, a meet held at Roshini Nilaya on Tuesday September 1.

The citizens gathered there demanded with raised voices that an alternate plan to widen and concretize the proposed road from Kankanady to Morgan’s Gate be finalized so as to save the trees between Kankanady and Marnamikatta, which were to be cut down as per the original plan.

The meeting started with organizer Eric Ozario and Vidya Dinkar, convener of Citizens Forum, speaking. Ozario said that Mangalore City Corporation, without any concern for the environment, was cutting down trees in the name of development. “It is not concerned about global warming; globalization is affecting everyone. So, we need to raise our voice before the MCC plan is implemented; saving trees is our main concern and it is our gift to global warming”, he said.

After a long meeting with the citizens and discussion of their views and opinions, a decision was reached to prepare a plan without felling a single tree. Venkatesh Pai, an architect, was appointed the representative to prepare an alternative plan after visiting the spot with Dharmaraj.

Dharmaraj also yielded to pressure for the removal of median points on this same road as it was disrupting traffic system, and assured that it would be done on Wednesday September 2.

Members from Citizen’s Forum, People’s Union for Civil Liberties, and like-minded organizations, along with the local residents, participated in the meeting.

Let us keep the trees. Let us fight for this. Development shoud not be at the expense of nature. Our mangalore has already been destroyed by the politicians and developers in the name of making money and modernisation. Let us keep the fight on, Mr Ozario.

Mr.Arun Menezes - Go ahead and chop all the trees that you have in Udupi but do not comment on cutting these trees. They are not in the middle of the road as they look in the pictures. These trees were there before we were born and we grew up playing under these trees after school hours in Gerosa. We walked home for lunch under their shades in the hot afternoons and they protected us from the rains too. They have sentimental values and we would like to see those trees standing there and protecting people from the sun and rain for a very very long time until nature takes its own course and they die a natural death. A big thank you to each and everyone who protested for saving these trees.

Similarly the building which is coming up next to Jerosa also must be stopped. People who live below that lane should watch out how they are going to connect municipality water line. Act now before its too late

We should try and take each and every options to preserve trees. What is the use if there are so many buildings being built or roads being contructed with no trees around. we are already facing a climate and after few years we shouldnt repent we shoudnt have cut the trees. It take decades for a tree to grow that big. Global warming is must these days. Consequences will be terrible for next generations. Development is also required but in a wise way.

These trees will have to go, just look at the pictures, these trees are almost on the middle of the potential road space, as the city grows the roads will have to be widened, there is not other option, it is just a matter of time...when?

Bulsam, What is the point of widening the road when actually there is no traffic congestion on that road? Secondly, let us assume the road is broadened (just because there seems to be scope there for broadening), now all the vehicles approaching Kankanady Junction will automatically clog.

That means a 4 lane will assimilate to a 2 lane suddenly causing even more traffic jams. Lastly in any part of the world, there is a speed limit in the vicinity of schools. Broadening the road with the co-operation of surrounding residents will only bring the vehicles into their compounds.

Thanks Roshni Nilaya, Mr Eric, Ms Vidya and all others for taking the initiative of saving the trees. As one can observe there is no much traffic on this road. Converting it into a superhighway would have only resulted in speeding of vehicles and risking the lives of small children as the place is surrounded with schools. Most of the vehicle learners actually prefer to drive on this road until they are confident. Just give us a clean road without potholes.

With little co-operation from the owners of the compound next to those tree rows, MCC can make those rows of trees as the middle divider highland with roads on both side.

What is noteworthy here is that the issue getting solved amicably through peaceful means. Let other organisations who use violence to get their voice heard learn from you. Congrats Vidya.

This is wonderful citizens getting together to ensure that their voice is heard. Now how about getting together to stop the noise pollution- this is a crying need of the hour otherwise the next generation will be Deaf. Jyoti to Kankanady to Bendore to Pumpwell to Morgan''s Gate to Hampankatta citizens should form a Forum where they sit in their homes, sit in their verandahs, stand on the roadside and jot down the number of the vehicles with the time/ date/ place that are causing noise pollution with their blaring air horns, their screeching tires because of reckless driving and crazy overtaking. Pass the info by a postcard or a hand ped letter to the CF or PUCL or just letterboxes kept at different locations. Ask a few of the pigmy bank collectors to collect the leetters an give it to a central body for action. the noise is deafening presently cannot we save our ear drums and even our sanity.
