Mumbai, Jan 1: Earlier today, Indian Railways announced that there would not be any hike in fares for suburban commuters.

"The railways has decided to marginally affect an increase in fare only over the non-suburban sections...there shall be no fare hike for passengers over suburban sections and season ticket-holders. This class constitutes 66 per cent of total passenger segment over Indian Railways," a senior railway officer said.

This news has come as a New Year gift for suburban commuters. Mumbai locals carry over lacs of people everyday and are considered to be a lifeline for many.

From January 1, for the non-suburban section, the fare increase will be 1 paise/ km for ordinary and non-AC class trains, 2 paise/km for mail/express non-AC coaches and 4 paise/km for AC class fare of all categories, which includes AC chair car. AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier and AC First class coaches. Those who have bought tickets before January 1 will not be required to pay the difference, officials stated.
