Udupi: TP Session - Congress Members Hold Protest, Stage Walk Out

Udupi, Oct 8: The general session of the taluk panchayat (TP) here, held on Wednesday October 7, had to be adjourned after the Congress members raised a hue and cry over the unauthorized corrections made in the resolution passed during the term of the in-charge president of  the TP, thereby effectively pruning down the grants of two members.

The taluk panchayat had held a session on July 9, when Satish Poojary of the Congress Party was the in-charge president. In that meeting, it was decided to release grant of Rs 2.10 lac for the constituency represented by member Ramesh Poojary and Rs 2.15 lac to the constituency of another member, Sanjeev Poojary, out of the total sum of Rs 4.25 lac received under the Rural Roads Development Scheme. The other 39 members were allotted a sum of one lac rupees each. When Shyamala Sudhakar became the president later, this decision was ammended, by setting aside Rs 60,000 for the Kallianpur - Kote Road.

When Action Plan for the same was presented at the Wednesday session, the Congress Party members vehemently opposed this ammendment, resulting in an exchange of heated words between the ruling and opposition party members. The Congress members raised slogans against the president and sat held dharna. The president's argument that the changes were made with the majority support in the standing committee meeting, did not go well with the agitating members.  When the president reminded them that such changes were affected even in the past, when the Congress Party was in power, the protestors asked her not to discuss the past incidents.

Even when the session was convened after the recess, the arguments continued. The Congress members continued to harp on this issue even after the lunch break. After the Congress Party members walked out thereafter, the session had to be adjourned to October 14, for want of quorum.

Vice president Saumya, standing committee chairman Katpady Shankar Poojary and executive officer Ramanand Nayak were present.
