Udupi, Oct 21: As part of its public awareness campaign about the importance of the disposal of solid waste, the local municipality had organized an awareness programme-cum-competition on this subject for the students of schools and colleges at the Town Hall here on Wednesday October 21.

Municipal president Dinakar Shetty Herga inaugurated the event. In his inaugural address, he said that disposal of plastic waste has been one of the biggest problems the municipality has been facing. As the government and local bodies alone can not be expected to create public awareness about the importance of scientific disposal of the solid waste, the students too should contribute to the cause by creating awareness about this aspect in their neighbourhood, he advised.

Shetty added that two rounds of discussions had already been held with Remedial Company Germany on the prospects of turning the garbage into manure. If this materializes, this city will be the first in the country to implement this ambitious project, he explained.

Students from 20 schools and eight PU colleges participated.  Competition on the issue of waste disposal was held under the categories of colour painting, essay and skit.

Malpe Fisheries College principal, Meti Mudiappa, and Katpady Sriniketan High School headmaster, Ashok Kumar Shetty, participated as chief guests. Municipal commissioner Gokuldas Nayak welcomed. The programme was compered by Sudhakar. Subrahmanya proposed vote of thanks.
