Karkala, Mar 3: Theft happened in the residence of retired deputy tahsildar S T Shettigar near Mudrady Subbannakatte between February 28 and March 2. Gold ornaments approximately valued at Rs 1.98 lac and cash of Rs 20,000 were stolen when family members were away.

The residents of the said house had left for Mulky on February 28 to participate in certain religious programme. They realized that their house was burgled in their absence after returning home on March 2. Hebri police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by Shettigar. Hebri station house officer Suma B, visited the spot of theft, pooled together information and began the probe. Members of the crime intelligence bureau, sniffer dogs and finger print experts from Udupi visited the spot.

The thieves broke open the bolt of the front door and used the key bunch they found in an open almirah to steal cash and gold ornaments from a locker placed in the bedroom. Even though there are houses surrounding the one targeted by the thieves, no one is sure when the theft happened. The thieves also entered the first floor of the house by breaking that door.

Some have expressed the suspicion that the theft might have happened on the night of March 1 as it rained heavily that night. The thieves have left behind silver utensils found in the house untouched.
