Mangaluru: Father Muller Medical College conducts post-graduate General Surgery quiz

Mangaluru, Mar 3: The department of General Surgery, Father Muller Medical College, on February 29 conducted a 'Dr P Venkat Rao Memorial state-level postgraduate Quiz' for postgraduate students in General Surgery at the hospital conference hall.

Dr P Venkat Rao Memorial PG quiz was started in 2009. This year is the decennial year of the quiz, which was the brainchild of Dr P Sathyamoorthy Aithala who was the then head of the department.

Students from various medical colleges in Karnataka consisting of 40 teams (two members each) participated in the quiz. The inaugural programme began with a prayer song by Dr Janine Diana Miranda and Dr Nayan Pinto, second-year postgraduates. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Leo Francis Tauro, the organizing chairman, Professor and head of the department of General Surgery. The function was presided over by Fr Richard Coelho, director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions. The lamp was lit by dignitaries on the dais.



The chief guest of the function, Dr Alfred J Augustine, reputed surgeon, Professor of General Surgery and Additional Dean, Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru was introduced to the gathering by Dr Rakesh Rai, Professor and Unit Head, department of General Surgery.

Dr Alfred J Augustine in his inaugural speech congratulated the institution and the department for remembering the hero of General Surgery department, late Dr P Venkat Rao. He was honoured and privileged to be the chief guest during the decennial year of Dr P Venkat Rao Memorial quiz. He remembered the great services rendered by Dr P Venkat Rao at Father Muller Hospital, Mangaluru. He recollected his Sweet memories with few of the Father Muller General Surgery department staff members during his student days and as a colleague was also shared. The importance of participating in quizzes was also stressed upon.

The director, Fr Richard Coelho, in his presidential address congratulated the department of General Surgery for conducting the quiz in memory of the surgeon par excellence and a general surgeon in true sense late Dr P Venkat Rao and wished the participants good luck. He appreciated the chief guest for his cordial relation with his colleagues in the General Surgery department of Father Muller’s.

Dr John Joseph S Martis, Professor & Unit Head and Organizing Secretary proposed the vote of thanks. Dr J P Alva, dean, Father Muller Medical College, Fr Rudolf Ravi D’Sa, administrator, Father Muller Medical College Hospital and Fr Ajith Menezes, administrator, Father Muller Medical College were present during the inauguration. Fr Nelson Dheeraj Pais, assistant administrator, Dr Udaya Kumar, medical superintendent, Dr Padmaja Udaya Kumar, vice-dean, Dr Anil Gomes, deputy chief superintendent and Sr Janet D’Souza, chief nursing officer were also present during the function.

Senior faculty Dr John Joseph S Martis, Dr Clement R S D’Souza and Dr Leo Francis Tauro were felicitated for their meritorious service of two decades in the institution.

Dr Chirag Pereira was the quiz master. The quiz consisted of a preliminary selection round followed by a final quiz of five rounds with the top five teams. The final quiz consisted of five rounds which included a case presentation, viva-voce, gammath (fun) rounds, clinical ward and surgery - operative videos (buzzer round).

The first prize was won by Dr Pradyumna S R & Dr Vivekanand, B M Patil Medical College, Bijapur. The second prize won by Dr U Prashanth and Dr Sharanya Shetty, A J Shetty Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru. The third prize was won by Dr Harsha S Poojary and Dr Priyanka K, A J Shetty Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru.

The prize distribution was done by the HOD and senior faculty members of the department. The programme was compered by Dr Supriya Pinto and Dr Sriranjani, final year postgraduates. All the staff members and postgraduates from the department of general surgery attended the programme. A total of 150 members participated in the programme. It was well appreciated by the participants.
