Beltangady, Apr 1: Huge heap of fishes which died in Kolna rivulet at Neriya in the taluk on Tuesday got deposited on the bank. A peacock also died in this incident. This large scale death happened as miscreants mixed poisonous substance in the rivulet to catch fishes.

A group of unidentified people had mixed over five kg of copper sulphate that is usally used for agriculture and some sort of poisonous substance. Dead fishes got deposited on the bank of the rivulet for a stretch of two km. A peacock which consumed water from the rivulet also lost its life.

Dharmasthala police sub-inspector Odiyappa and forest officials visited the spot and undertook inspection. This incident has happened at a time when villages are reeling under the fear of coronavirus. There have been allegations of people who are not native of this area, visiting the rivulet to catch fish by using electricity. Water from the rivulet is also used by the people of Pilikala, Neriya, Aniyoor and other places. This water is also used for agriculture and for feeding the cattle. The poisonous substance would have caused large scale death and destruction if not for early detection.
