88% Indians say lockdown should be extended: Poll


New Delhi, Apr 9 (IANS): As novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases continue to increase in the country, at least 88 per cent Indians feel that the 21-day nationwide lockdown, scheduled to end on April 14, should be extended further, a new poll said on Thursday.

The findings showed that 88 per cent of the respondents are refraining to order food online during the lockdown period, according to the survey by news platform Inshorts.

The poll which included response from 40,000 app users revealed that 92 per cent of the respondents feel private sector should be allowed testing of COVID-19 in order to augment testing facilities for the respiratory disease.

"Lockdown is the best way to practice social distancing and curb the spread of the coronavirus," said the survey.

The Odisha government on Thursday decided to extend the lockdown period till April 30 to combat the COVID-19 outbreak. It also decided to keep the educational institutions closed till June 17.

Odisha is the first state in the country which extended the lockdown period by another 15 days.

The total tally of novel coronavirus cases in India reached up to 5,734 on Thursday. Of these, 5,095 are active cases, 166 are dead, one has migrated, while 472 people have been discharged after recovery.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state so far with 1,135 active cases, 117 cured and discharged and 72 have died.

    Continue lockdown until active cases come down to ZERO but more importantly FEED the hungry with monies from government coffers, RBI reserve fund and Foreign currency reserves.

    Who are these 88%? I think majority of people in 88% are these people who get paid despite not working. They like this condition and can play ludo inside house and make supermarket deliver essential items at their door stop.

    Please remove lockdown in phased manner. How a country like India can survive without economic activity?

    How below poverty people and small business people can survive without income and without food?

    Do we need more deaths due to hunger?

    No body will count this number. As per google already 5000 people are dying in India due to hunger.

    What should struggling business class do? Money used to be in rotation mode...now that everything is shut...if in case the lockdown continues...what should struggling business people do...BPL will get rations,poor will get also along with cash...looks like suicide remains the option? Cos to buy commodities cash is required...to pay electricity cash is required...for basic things cash is required...when things were open money could be rotated? Now what to do? Jump from 10th floor ?

    Simple solution- Government must pass a law to make the filthy rich to donate the Cash to feed the hungry in India during the crises over and above using government reserves of Money.

    I m wondering how people will cope-up with one another even after transportation is opened up. Very dangerous in coming days. Our's is over populated country...cannot distance with one another much. Rab Jaane Kal Kya Hogha...Aaj Ka Din Enjoy Karo..Bas.
