Moodbidri: Heavy rain, whirlwind, damage several houses

Moodbidri, Apr 20: On Sunday, April 19, heavy rain with whirlwind was experienced in Moodbidri and surrounding areas at around 4 pm. As a result, roofs of over 25 houses located in Bangalapadavu and Baggajalu within the municipal limits and Hudco colony in Prantya village, Madiyadi were blown away. Several areca and coconut trees were uprooted but no loss of lives or injuries were reported.

The temporary sheds standing at the stadium of Swarajya Maidan in the town crashed to the ground and sheets blew away. A number of flex boards fell. People escaped from falling plastic sheets of flexes by running here and there. Sheets forming roofs of houses of Meenakshi Acharya from Kemplaje and also those of Shanta and Shivappa in Hudco colony were blown away.

Trees fell at Mahaveer College Road, Venugopal Colony, Bantwal Road etc. Hailstorm was experienced in Kallabettu area. Tahsildar Anitalaxmi, revenue officials and others have been assessing the damage.

A drizzle was also experienced in some parts of the district including Mangaluru city after midnight on Sunday but it was not enough to provide relief or make any significant contributions towards bringing down the temperature.
