'Ask Indian Embassy in Iran to get food for stranded fishermen'


Chennai, Apr 20 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Monday requested the Central government to arrange food, water and other basic needs for about 1,000 Indian fishermen stranded in Iran.

In a letter to S. Jaishankar, Minister for External Affairs, the text of which was released to the media, Palaniswami said about 1,000 Indian fishermen are stranded in Chiruyeh, Kish, Lavan, Bandar-eMogham, Asaluyeh and other places in Iran.

Around 650 of the fishermen are from Tamil Nadu.

Palaniswami said the state government is receiving repeated requests from the stranded fishermen and their families to provide food, water and other basic needs.

"Hence, I request your good office to direct the Embassy of India in Iran again to arrange food, water and other basic needs immediately to the stranded fishermen and also to arrange for their early return to India, Palaniswami said.
