Sonia Gandhi writes to PM, demands package for MSMEs

New Delhi, Apr 25 (IANS): Pointing out that the Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) contributes one third to the nation's economy, Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi, here on Saturday, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the grave economic crisis facing the nation and demanded a package to give liquidity and confidence to the sector.

In a letter to the Prime MInister, Sonia Gandhi said, "The last five weeks have brought our nation face to face with several challenges. As we continue our fight against Covid-19, I felt it essential to highlight an economic concern that needs immediate attention and intervention. If ignored, this issue has the potential of having a devastating and expansive ripple effect on our economy."

She wrote the MSMEs contributed close to one third of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP), accounted for almost 50 per cent of exports and employed over 11 crore people.

"At this moment, without appropriate support, more than 6.3 crore MSMEs stand on the verge of economic ruin," she said.

Stating that every single day of the lockdown is costing Rs 30,000 crore to the sector, the Congress leader said nearly all MSMEs had lost sales orders, seen complete cessation of work, and had revenue negatively impacted.

"Most worrying of all, 11 crore employees are at the risk of losing jobs as MSMEs struggle to pay wages and salaries. The government needs to introduce a series of measures to meet this crisis head-on or risk a much large economic crisis down the road," she said.

She urged the government to announce Rs 1 lakh crore MSME wage protection package and set up a Rs 1 lakh crore credit guarantee fund.

She said the actions taken by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) must get reflected in banks' measures to ensure adequate, easy and timely credit supply to MSMEs. "These measures need to be supported by an expansion and extension of the RBI's moratorium on payment of loans for the MSMEs beyond the stipulated three months," she said.

India, with an annual gross domestic product of approximately Rs 210 lakh crore, will lose about 4% of its GDP during the 21-day lock-down period. The world's biggest lock-down may have cost the Indian economy Rs 7-8 lakh crore.

Despite repeated assurances by different sectors and a request by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, job loss and salary cuts are hitting Indians hard. It would take at least 2-3 months to restore the industry supply chain completely in the domestic market.

Indian economy is expected to lose over $4.5 billion every day of the lock-down and around $100 billion during the 21 day nationwide lock-down period.

As analysts predict a global recession, India, one of the fastest-growing economies, is preparing to weather heavy job losses and support the industries hardest hit by the lock-down and ban on tourists, including the tourism and hospitality sectors.
About 80 % of India’s 470 million-strong labour force – or about 380 million people – are in informal employment.
India lost more jobs due to coronavirus lockdown than US did during Depression. About 12 crore Indians have lost employment over the last two weeks. Let us assume that 8 crore of these are the main or the only earner of their family. So, one-third of the country’s 25 crore households could be facing a livelihood crisis.

38 million or 70% of jobs at risk in the tourism industry.
10 million Jobs at risk in the entire textile chain.
A bulk of the 136 million jobs in segments with casual workers and unwritten contracts, and self-employed areas are at extreme risk.
In agriculture one may witness a debt-creating paralysis: farmers being either unable to harvest their crops, or to reach mandis in time, leaving them indebted for the next few seasons

While US paid heavy price for 'Namste Trump' delaying responding to crisis, PM Modi India was busy toppling MP government, Delhi riots and Trump welcome.

I was watching Sachin Pilot being interviewed by Arnab on Republic TV. God despite being a BJP , I was really impressed. Hence I came to comment here. A Sensible Congressman !! A rarity!! MAY GOD GIVE ALL STRENGTH TO PILOT to fight the covid-19 in Rajasthan. He is a very smart man and politician. If he is given the right platform he can surely be thePM candidate from CONgress party. But ALAS! Congress high command does not want one who has a better IQ than their Pappu on the helm. Over to Wayanad constituency for victory in polls.

Ousted by Indians ? EVMs helped for majority in Parliamentary election. Horse trading helped assembly elections. DeMo, return of black money @ 15 L per Indian, jobs created for the young India, the rising Rupee rate, rising GDP and mother of all, though the oil prices outside India are rock-bottom, we are still paying above 70/- per Ltr. - mother of all - 'PM Cares' doesn't come out from any corner - God knows which cave it is stored into. Corona is the last nail in the coffin.

Wait for 2024 elections. You will know the efficiency of the current govt.

You perhaps don't even remember how MMS andCo managed this country with 13 party coalition (dancing to the tune of Mamatha, Jayalalitha and Laloo) In spite of expensive crude oil, the Rupee was much stronger in spite the present PM was touting that "Rupaih ICU mein hai" (We don't know where is the rupee now, do you know?) With absolute majority, what the present government of Jokers doing since 6 years, when the crude oil price is at it's lowest ever. People with Congress-phobia will oppose everything what Congress does.

Deepakraj, likewise, the govt can waive off tax for one year - can't it ?

Let the govt run the nation ? It has crores of Rupees to trade the MLAs, why not to run the nation ? If it can finance the MLAs, let them finance us citizens too ? Once ?

By-the-way, you are a receiver (salary) or a giver ? Certainly not the latter !

Don't require Sonia Gandhi's advice, govt knows what is required and what to do. We have seen what her UPA govt did during past 10 years, how much MSME benefited.
Indian Govts effort in handling the Covid 19 is much appreciated. Australia and New Zealand wants to take leaf out of India's method in controlling Covid 19 epidemic.

Like RaGa says. Look at the world NOT from your position , but look at the world from YOUR position. The current Govt has fullfilled every promise as per the manifesto. Hence it was re-elected in 2019. If all you said was true, RaGa would not have been booted out of his 70year old family strong hold by a lady of all the people. And then he had to flee to Wayanad in Kerala to win. You dont have to be an Einstien to figure out how a he won in Wayanad without any accomplishments. One look at the population and you have your answer.

But why do you chicken out to have a face to face open debate, press meet, JPC, Q&A session with RaGa???. It should be a cake walk to you he being so dumb but you run far away and give one way monologue fake bhashans accusing him without taking any questions????....FYI, people understand and forgive his slip of tongue but have lot of trust in his deeds with less talk.

If PM has to debate with a MP , then he has to open a call center. Why didnt Pappu debate with Smriti Irani ? She challenged him multiple times since 2014 , and eventually she routed him in the elections. Hence RaGa had to flee to Wayanad to win on muslim votes. Yes, People have really understood RaGa , hence there are numerous funny videos that are dedicated to him on the internet. You may watch it when you want some comedy,
