Puttur, Apr 29: Two young children, who faced torture regularly at the hands of their mother since long, were rescued by the officials of Women and Child Welfare department with the support of Uppinangady Police on Tuesday, April 28.

The woman was regularly seen near Uppinangady gram panchayat office at night with her two-year-old son and a small baby. In an inebriated state, she used to mercilessly attack her children. In January, her behaviour worsened as a result of which the child used to beg the passersby to protect him from his violent mother. A seventh standard student of Indraprastha school, Avanish Kumar, who observed the situation, had written to the Women and Child Development minister on January 31, seeking their help in saving the boy.

In response to the letter, the officials tried to rescue the boy but had to retreat as the woman went wild every time they approached her. She would also warn of killing her children if the authorities drew nearer. Consequently, the operation was kept on hold.

On account of lockdown, liquor sale has been suspended. The officials thought that this is the ideal time to act. On Tuesday, they went near the lady who instantly flashed a knife. The police somehow succeeded in making her board the vehicle. During the journey the lady again used threatening tactics, it is learnt.

Child Development Project Officer in the department Shreelata S, supervisor Sujata, assistant sub-inspector Seetharam and other staff members were present. The mother and her children have been provided residential accommodation under the supervision of the Women and Child Development department at Nellikatte government school, Puttur. Officials said that they will take further action as per the instructions of the district level officials.
