Nammuru Barkuru distributes food kits to 500 needy people

Udupi, Apr 29: Nammuru Barkuru, a Facebook page of Barkurians or residents of Barkur residing worldwide, have contributed food kits to 500 needy families of Barkur during this lockdown period.

Nammuru Barkuru is a Facebook group of Barkurians residing worldwide. In an initiative taken by Alwyn Andrade, the group members decided to provide food kits to the needy families of Barkur. Around 500 kits worth Rs 3.5 lac were distributed to the needy of the locality.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, Alwyn Andrade said, "There are more than 10,000 members in our Facebook group. Most of the members have contributed for this cause. We would be delivering these kits to the homes of the needy families. We have decided not to take any photographs of the kits distribution and respect the anonymity of the beneficiaries" he said.

The food kits included 10 kg rice, sugar, tea powder, rava, and other essential food items. Members of Nammuru Barkuru group volunteered to prepare the food kits.

Speaking on the occasion Fr Philip Neri Arranha, parish priest, St Peters Church Barkur said, "Asha workers, police personnel are working risking their lives to spread awareness about the pandemic. May Almighty God bless them abundantly. Nammuru Barkuru group should share happiness as well as sorrows with everyone. The team should continue doing these type of noble work in the upcoming days also" he wished.

Sub inspector of Brahmavar police station appreciated and advised stating, "In some cases while organizing such programmes, social distancing is not maintained, and it is appreciable to note that you have organized this programme adhering to the social distancing norms. The team has made all efforts to follow the rules and regulations. You must give information about outsiders visiting the place to the health workers."

ASHA workers, electricians under electricity department and Chandru, a sweeper, were felicitated on the occasion for their selfless service.

President Barkur gram panchayat Shaila D’Souza, Rajyotsava Awardee Shantharam Shetty Barkur, superior of convent Sr Jasmith Crasta, Alwyn Andrade Ganesh Shetty, Mala Santhosh Shetty, and Anand Kumar Barkur were among others in the team members present on the occasion.
