Bangalore, Dec 31: The state government has, in tune with a decision taken at a cabinet meeting held at Gulbarga on September 27 this year, formally announced the formation of a separate district, Yadagiri (also known as Yadgir). The district, carved out of Gulbarga district in which the town is located, has come into being officially from Wednesday December 30.

277 posts attached to Gulbarga district have been made a part of the new district. At the district level however, the present officials will oversee the affairs till regular officials are appointed. Dr K G Jagadish, an IAS officer, who recently functioned as the commissioner of Gulbarga City Corporation and special officer of the new district, has been appointed as the deputy commissioner of this new district. The new district has a population of 9, 56,180. Yadagiri, Surpur and Shahapur taluks, which formed part of Gulbarga district so far, will henceforth function as the taluks of the newly formed district. Out of the 13 legislative assembly constituencies attached to Gulbarga district, four, Gurumathkal, Yadgiri, Shahapur and Surpur, are located in the new district. 21 zilla panchayat constituencies of the erstwhile district also are located within the new district.

The formation of this relatively small district is expected to provide a much sought after boost to the developmental initiatives of Hyderabad Karnataka region.

In 1983 Karnataka was having only 19 districts. Now they are 30.In A.P.still districts are only 23.It is better to carve each Member of Parliament constituency into a district.
