Udupi, Jan 8: The Save National Highway 17 Committee has called for a bandh of NH 17, NH 63, NH 48, NH 13 and NH 206 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 23 in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts, demanding immediate repairs and widening of highways and other roads.

Convener of the committee B. Govindaraj Hegde told presspersons here on Thursday that besides the national highways, the Government should immediately take up repair of State highways, major district roads and rural roads.

The Government should prepare the Improvement of Riding Quality Programme (IRQP) of national highways. It should complete the works on these highways by February-end, he said.

The four-laning of the stretch between B.C. Road and Surathkal should be completed immediately. The repair of NH 48 from B.C. Road to Mangalore should also be completed.

The four-laning of NH 17 between Surathkal and Kundapur should be taken up immediately.

Land acquisition for this project should be restricted to the least possible level and proper compensation should be paid to land-losers, Mr. Hegde said.

Flyovers should be constructed on NH 17 at places where it passed through commercial or religious places.

The concreting of the Shiradi ghat road, for which Rs. 110.4 crore had been sanctioned, should be taken up immediately.

Yet another effort of the people of the 3 districts to make their voices heard. No hopes of any positive results even after this bandh. A bandh won't have any desired effect on the concerned parties. Instead it will inconvenience the hapless general public. It will be a routine exercise with no tangible results. It would be better to take some stronger action on the concerned people directly. Anyways, all the best to the ones organising this bandh.
