Mangalore: Private Bus Hits DC’s Car – Ponnuraj Unhurt

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jan 8: Like the citizens who are compelled to live with the over speeding, ever-competing and erratically driven private buses in the city, the district deputy commissioner (DC), who himself has received several complaints about these things, had a first-hand experience of these things on Thursday January 7.

As the DC was moving towards the zilla panchayat complex located near Urwa Store in his Ambassador car to attend a meeting on Thursday afternoon, a private service bus bound for Udupi hit his car at Urwa Stores. While his car suffered some damages, he did not suffer any injuries.

The people immediately gathered on the spot. Policemen of both traffic and Urwa police stations appeared on the scene confiscated the bus. The DC, after recovering from the sudden development, moved to the venue of the meeting in another car.

When contacted later, the Urwa policemen at first, feigned ignorance about such an incident. However, later they agreed that this minor incident was closed through a compromise. It is learnt that the bus owners have taken upon the responsibility of repairing the car of the DC. However, till late in the evening, the district superintendent of police, Dr A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, was unaware of the incident.

Enough is enough. It is high time for DC who is also the head of RTO to recommend to the Minister of Transport that all Mangalore city buses be taken over by KSRTC. This is also taking into consideration of the newly laid concrete roads in the city where these unruly bus drivers will have no one to control them. This sounds like a "wake up call".

The bus owners have taken upon the responsibility of repairing the car of the DC!! Does that end the matter? Such accidents major and minor happen every hour on the udupi-Mangalore highway all due to the careless attitude of the drivers of buses. The bus owners must all join toghther and stop the unhealthy competition and give healthy driving tips to the drivers.

I hope that minor though this accident may have been the DC will pull up the SP/ Traffic Police for the callous attitude of the police department. It is not uncommon that these private buses on purpose nudge cars that do not get out of their speeding paths- woe be the owner who makes a scene he/she is abused by the driver/conductor & even some of the passengers too. I have had such an experience myself just a few months ago. The state of the road going to the railway stations is a good example. Lets see what the DC does- compromise should never have been resorted to the DC"s car will be repaired by the bus owner but the common man has to get his own car repaired at his own cost every single time.

Whilst I wish safety and longetivity of DC, Mr Ponnuraj, let me tell you all that God is the best of all planners. For the last few months, we have been hearing about the reckless driving/speeding of private buses and loss of many valuable innocent lives, but the administration has failed to take any concrete step to curb this menance, could be due to some political interference or interference by the poweful lobbies.

Now when the law enforcing authority itself becomes a victim of said rash driving and not safe, just think about the plight of aam addmni across the road. This incident is an eye opener for the district administration and at least for the time being I hope that DC would pull his socks up and come out with remedial measure and ensure the safety and security of road users.

Is this how the Mangaloreans have to live? If the DC has had a first hand experience with such rash and negligient driving, how can now case be registered. If repairing a car can solve the problem, even habitual criminals such be just fined and let go, right people? These habits of letting the offendes go scot free is a regular practice in Mangalore, since the traffic police and bus owners are in nexus with each other. There is a regular gift sent to traffic police who in turn will help bail out these bus onwers in case of problems like these. Please Mr. Ponnuraj if you ever get to read our comments, make arrangements to note the driving license number and repeated offences need to be punished and license confiscated and make sure such drivers will never ever drive again. People please wake up and will the efficient journalists of Daijiworld ensure that the guilty here in the DC's case and other similar drivers be punished.
