Udupi, Jun 21: In a tragic incident, a man died and a woman sustained injuries after their car veered off the road and plunged into a pond at Chowlikere in Barkur here on Sunday June 21.

The deceased has been identified as Santhosh Shetty. The woman, identified as Shweta, was an employee at his workplace, it is said.

The car, a white Creta, belonged Santhosh Shetty.

Initially police sources had said that the woman had passed away while the man had suffered injuries. However, police have now confirmed that the woman sustained injuries while Santhosh Shetty died.

Unconfirmed sources said that the car suffered a tyre burst and veered off the road, falling straight into the pond. The pond has no safety barriers or walls. There is also a steep turn near the pond.

The locals rushed to rescue the car occupants and after some efforts with the help of the police, the car was brought up. It is learnt that the car overturned while falling into the pond, and only the wheels were visible on the surface, which made rescue efforts difficult.

The car occupants were rushed to hospital.

Shweta has been shifted to Manipal hospital, and her condition is said to be critical.

Brahmavar police have registered a case.

The lost lives won't able to brought back. Now at least gram panchyat and respective road and transport department erect some reflective barrier so that more accidents can be averted?

Just building the concrete roads will increase more friction with wet condition. Please consider the center line reflector painting and yellow reflector in the edge.

Our traffic police department does not punish the idiots who use high beam lights unnecessarily.
High beam lights causes temporary blindness which results in fatal accidents .Must ban use of high beam lights unnecessary. Om Shanti Shweta .

Many reasons can cause tyres to burst:
    1. Not enough tyre pressure. Indians rarely check their tyre pressure unless it's punctured completely. Even a little drop in pressure can cause heavy load on the tyres
    2. Old worn tyres
    3. Overloaded vehicle running at high speed
    4. Hitting some object on the road at high speed

    RIP Santhosh Shetty....
    Best wishes for recovery Swetha...

We have 20 Century roads and 21 century motor Vehicles.....so there is a clear mis-match....
This looks like mechanical failure / Tyre burst...perhaps could not have avoided...BUT 90% accidents occur due to drivers fault...

    ...Tak...Takk...

Why you are blaming Shobbaka, Chowlikere pond was there before independence. Just imagine how many MPs were elected. Worst than this and extreme dangerous so many other places are there. IAS passed DC's also can put up the proposal. NO need of MP's or MLA's. Only to do good things mind alertness is required. Unfortunately we are so much behind in this except big big educational certificates.

The pond should be filled up.Is it acceptable?.Then only such accidents may stop. No need of shobakka etc. They have better things to do suchas investigating Tablighi jamat effect on coronavairus, love jihad etc. etc.
I see a similar sort of pond near kavoor junction on the derabail to airport road in mangalore .

    RIP.

This place is one of the riskiest place to drive. I have driven on this road numerous times but every time when I reach this area I feel nervous. There is no barricade, no wall nothing - at least until 2019 my last vacation. The gap between the road and the pond is just a few meters only, the smallest slip could lead the vehicle to jump in to the pond.

I recall the incident of a tourist bus jumped in tot his pond in early 1980, I remember a couple of deaths were reported that time as well. From that day til today, nothing has been changed.

Even local gram panchayath or talik panchayath can construct a barrier for this road /pond. It is really pity that since 1980 not a single local body or elected representative has shown any intrest to construct a barrier
