Mangaluru: Patients complain of negligence at district COVID hospital, DHO clarifies

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 24: Video clips of patients accusing the Wenlock Hospital staff of not treating them properly and charging the hospital of not extending facilities to which are their eligible, are making the rounds in the social media. Three such clips are being circulated.

The video clips also contain pictures of dirt having fallen into drinking water utensil, glass of tea kept in the open, and used masks having been inserted to the toilet windows.

One of the clips shows a youth questioning the hospital staff about a tablet that has undergone a colour change to brown. A staff member wearing PPE kit is seen moving ahead after scolding the youth. The youth also is shown expressing dissatisfaction at the fact that aged people and youngsters are together kept in the same ward.

In response to the contents of the video, Wenlock Hospital superintendent, Dr Sadashiva Shanbhogue, said that infection has been confirmed in the case of some young men who have come from abroad. Even though they do not display symptoms of the disease, their test reports are continuously confirming the presence of infection. They want to return home but are frustrated on account of the result and hence are making false allegations, he reasoned.

Shanbhogue pointed out that 240 persons have been cured and sent home so far. He said that the doctors and other staff are risking their own lives in treating these patients, and expressed resentment at the false accusations being made against the doctors and staff just out of their desire to get discharged soon and go back home.

Clarifying the issue, district health officer (DHO) Dr Ramachandra Bayari spoke to Daijiworld and said, “We give the best service to the patients be it regarding food or hygiene. We have over 190 active patients and all patients will not have similar tastes. We will fulfill the small demands of patients such as providing hot water, facility to sleep among others. So far many who have discharged have called up and congratulated us for the services provided by our hospital.”

Regarding the complaint of single toilet, Bayari said, “There is nothing to be afraid of as all are positive tested patients. There are no single toilets for individual patients. If a positive tested person is among negative patients, then we have to worry. We are happy that some point out our loopholes and bring them to our notice so that we can change.

“When someone records a video pointing out our faults we cannot do much about it if it is not true. Some complained that we provide expired medicine. If the medicine is expired, let the person show the evidence,” he said.

On a complaint about a tablet that underwent a change in colour to brown, Dr Bayari said, “Different brands give different colour to medicines. But the content is same.”

Shocking, to observe that Dakshin Kannada district, has redundant health care infrastructures, for the common citizens of the region !!!!! Sucessive governments have failed miserably to develop modern hospitality, for the marginalized, they are still dependent on a colonial, inadequate Wenlock hospital.... Likewise netas, have failed to modernize the region with any source of livelihood !!! Educated youths have no option, but to migrate to other cities and states....

This news is about not treating COVID -19 patients properly. Why are you shying away to criticise the present government and people's representatives? BJP has been continuously winning elections here and what is their contribution?

Three to four decades back this hospital was in better condition and people used to get good treatment there. Things have deteriorated since last 15 to 20 years. Leaders are busy in spreading communal hatred and where is the time for doing good things.oo

Of course doctors will be rude... They are so stressed out. Patients are expecting vip treatment or what. These patients have to accept the fact that it is a pandemic and all their money cannot get them a suite room in any of the private hospital.
These same patients, when they visit a police station for any work and confronted by rude cops don't utter a word. When they go to any govt office / ministers office, go like a sheep to get their work done. Then why can't they swallow their pride with doctors.

@Mbeary DXB You really have no idea what's it's to be in a government hospital dedicated for covid 19, because you are on a comfort zone in confines of sofa. I have seen the clips of several indian hospitals & western hospitals the way quarantine people are stuffed in a single room is a nightmare, once I read hospitals in delhi keeping dead patients alongside infected patients. Hope you are safe.

Sorry, my comment was not directed with regard to possiblity of unhygienic food served. Of course basic needs to be provided and has to be clean. But the problem is when public is rude with doctors. As though doctors are responsible. The hospital staff are blamed for everything, when it clearly not their fault. They are papa working with more stress and salary cuts.
My problem is that why doesn't the public go catch hold of elected representatives. Hold them accountable. Take their videos of assurance. Take their phone no from internet and call them and question. Didn't u stand in line for 1 hr during election to vote for them. It is their duty. But the general public Wil not do so. Even if u have to, u Wil wait outside MLA/mp cabin for 3 hrs and talk to them as though u are a servant. But it's very easy for public to take doctors video, insult them and make it viral. Have u ever realised how insulting I cud be for the family of the doctor?
The attitude of public must change, or else we have no right to complain. That is my point.
