Bengaluru: Coronavirus lockdown teaches politicians about importance of social media

Bengaluru, Jun 24: The coronavirus-induced lockdown has taught the politicians about the importance of being active on social media. They have now realized that social media plays a very important role in reaching out to the people of their constituency and to keep the voters informed about what they have done or been doing.

A situation has been created in which how far the politicians are active in social sites needs to be measured. Congress also has introspected on this issue and checked how many of its legislators are effectively using social media. It has found that 70 per cent of its legislators have not been efficiently making use of social media. Therefore, it has decided to address the deficiency towards achieving better results.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, D K Shivakumar, has got the official information that out of the party's 68 MLAs, only 21 are effectively using social media. It is learnt that he has asked the social media team of the party to extend individual assistance to these MLAs to improve their performance.

The party's social media team has already been working aggressively. It has been working quite appreciably towards catching the central and state government in a piquant situation, shaping people's opinion, and also to make the people aware of the issues for which the party stands for. Still, the party feels that its legislators may face adversities if they lag behind in keeping the people abreast of their activities and in keeping in touch with the voters. The Congress leaders believe that the BJP has less number of legislators who fall in this category.

Most of the legislators from the city are active on social media. MLAs, particularly from north Karnataka and rural belts, have not shown enough interest in using social media. The party wants them to keep posting their activities they are involved within their constituency and continue to post video clips of meetings, functions, progress review etc they indulge in their constituencies. The party also wants them to take part in programmes that are beamed alive, in which they reply to questions raised by the people.

As per the KPCC information, Siddaramaiah, Krishna Byregowda, Soumya Reddy, Dinesh Gundu Rao and party president D K Shivakumar are ahead of others in using social sites. Among the BJP legislators, education minister S Suresh Kumar leads the pack. He is usually active on social media since 5.30 am. Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar, Sorab MLA Kumar Bangarappa, Surpur MLA Raju Gowda, Dr K Sudhakar and Dr Ashwath Narayan are also very much active in the social media.
