Mangalore, Mar 5:  Police arrested members of various trade unions who protested in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in the city on Friday March 5, demanding that the price of food items be stabilized, there be a proper public distribution system, and withdrawal of investment from public sector companies.

Protestors included members of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Bharatheeya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), and Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS.)

B Madhava of CITU, addressing the protest, said that the union government was least bothered about the rise in prices of essential food items.

“The rates of food grains and other items are increasing day by day but the government has not taken any kind of action to prevent this”, he said adding that the various organizations represented by citizens protested all over India on this issue, but the government has not reacted to citizens’ demands.

Police arrested the protesters when they tried to enter the DC’s office with their demands and were later released.
