Udupi, Mar 11: President of the municipal council here, Dinkar Shetty, has said that the municipality will approach the district deputy commissioner with a request to remove the gates set up on Kanakadasa Road and Tenkapet Road for making Car Street here a vehicles-free zone. This step is being taken in view of various problems being faced by the people of the town, he explained. The president also said that the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police had not taken the municipality into confidence while deciding to erect gates at the entry points of Car Street.

Councillor, Shyamprasad Kudva, who raised the topic at the general session of the municipal council held on Wednesday March 10, demanded for the removal of the gates and pave way for free movement of vehicles at Car Street.

Dr M R Pai, who drew support from councilor, Amrita Krishnamurty, added that the district administration should be convinced of the need to remove the gates, as vehicles have to reach Car Street to repair the high mast lamps there and also to attend to drainage works.

The session thanked the central government for taking firm steps to make reservation for women in assemblies and Lok Sabha a reality. Various other issues were also discussed at the session.
