Mangalore, Mar 16: Speakers at the inauguration of the 16th Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Sammelan said that the hopes of saving Kannada from decline now rested with children.

Poet H.S. Venkateshamurthy, who inaugurated the three-day conference here on Monday, said that parents should encourage their children to speak Kannada and not English at their early age.

He urged the Government to make the teaching of Kannada mandatory till the 10th standard in all schools.

Mr. Venkateshamurthy said that Kannada sammelans, processions, speeches and seminars would not help save Kannada.

He said that most parents now taught their children nursery rhymes in English and not Kannada songs. The habit of reading Kannada books, including novels, was on the decline among children.

“If our children continue to speak in Kannada, there will be no threat to Kannada,” he said.

President of the sammelan Padekal Narasimha Bhat said that literary critics had pointed out that Kannada had grown through a method of give and take from other languages such as Sanskrit, English, Malayalam and Tamil.

Although people talked about classical status now, Kannada had attained that status much earlier.

“The Kannada work ‘Kavirajamarga' proves that Kannada is a classical language. Poets like Pampa, Ranna and Kumaravyasa have proved their originality in their works,” he said.

Pejawar Math seer Visvesha Tirtha Swamiji said that study of literature had the power of awakening the subconscious mind.

The president of the 15th sammelan and poet Subraya Chokkadi spoke. S. Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president of the Dakshina Kannada unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, welcomed the gathering.

Procession

Earlier, a procession was taken out from Bunts Hostel to the Town Hall, the venue of the conference.

    Dear Suphala shenoy/singapore.

When this "political seer" is bent upon deviding society and spitting venom on us, why I should not point my finger to him. Please ask him to keep quiet and not to devide the society, so that I too reciprocate it with equal measures. Every action has its own opposite re action.

    Mr Shahnawaz Kukkikatte,
Please stop dividing Hindus as Manuvadis and non Manuvadis. When we hindus are ourselves unaware of this why do you want to unnecessarily bring a rift between us? And I feel your comments here are totally irrelevant.

Foolish arguments. Any language cannot survive by forceful imposition. Survival of language rests on many factors, these days mainly by globalization. Our people move around the globe for employment, we cannot expect them to teach their children Kannada unless their mother tongue is Kannada. I love Kannada but my children cannot understand anything in Kannada, they cannot be blamed for this, neither me. I feel bad when thinking of the future of Kannada but we have to accept the change. Civilizations have lived and perished, dynasties have ruled and ruined, so is the case with languages. We have seen the fate of rich language Sanskrit - mainly because of the limited usage by limited class. Kannada will also see the same fate unless the language is freed from the clutches of religious dogmas attached to it. The inter mingling of language and Hindu religious cultures has made non-Hindus to feel Kannada as an alien language.
Dear Kannada activists, if you are seriously interested in the survival of our Kannada language, then see it as the language of Karnataka and not as the language of mere Hindus. Try to work towards making our language as an inclusive language.

If a lamp is lighted by other than a manuvadi, will that light of the lamp be rejected by God? Will the spirit of light die? Why to promote manuvad in all functions? Are manuvadis and others not equal to each other in creation? Why still there is a difference?

Elladharu Iru Enthadaru Iru Endendhu Nee Kannadavagiru Kannadave Sathya., the famous poem of Rashtrakavi Kuvempu.
I did my education up till high school in Kannada medium school(St. Joseph high school), the nuns & priest & teachers who taught us then used to sing this song during assembly, and before starting the Kannada class along with national anthem, now i live in Sydney still have great respect for Kannada language, read papers and literature online, when ever i find time, also we have a kannada sangh in Sydney, which exhibits kannada culture, literature and tradition to Australian public, along with Indian cultural programe.
