Mangalore: IGP Impresses on Need to Strengthen Sea Border Security

Mangalore, Apr 6: “India has a very long coastline, which also is the country’s border. Of late, the risk of destructive attacks by enemies of the country through the sea route has increased. Hence, there is a need to give top priority to guarding the nation’s sea border,” said western range inspector general of police, Gopal B Hosur.

He was speaking at the valedictory function of the 47th National Maritime Week celebrations at New Mangalore Port Trust here on Monday April 5.

“It cannot be denied that a long sea cost has helped the country to achieve good progress. About 80% of the country’s exports are carried out through the sea route. 77 percent of the income through exports also comes through the sea,” he added.

P Tamilvanan, chairman of NMPT, who presided over the function, asked the youths to be prepared to make use of the employment potential being officered by the shipping industry.

Master mariner, Capt H T C Vaaz, NMDC chairman, Ivan Monteiro, deputy chairman, P K S Pillai, Mahila Samaj president, Mudeshwari Tamilvanan etc., were present.

On this occasion, felicitation of senior sailors and releasing the flag of the merchant navy, were also conducted.
