S.Korea reports 61 new Covid-19 cases

Seoul, Sep 26 (IANS): South Korea reported 61 new coronavirus cases on Saturday, marking the first time that the single-day spike fell below 100, as the country is struggling with cluster infections in the greater Seoul area ahead of a major holiday.

The new cases, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), including 49 local infections, increased the overall caseload to 23,516, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Saturday's figure marked the first fall below 100 after three consecutive days of triple-digit new daily infections.

The country reported 114 new cases on Friday.

The recent spikes were mainly attributed to cluster infections to a church in northern Seoul and an anti-government rally held on August 27.

Four additional deaths were reported, raising the toll to 399. The fatality rate stood at 1.7 per cent.

The country has carried out 2,290,345 coronavirus tests since January 3, the KDCA said.
