Puttur: Fresh areca nut prices breach all previous records

Puttur, Oct 9: Traditionally, freshly harvested areca nuts enter the market beginning from the first week of October. This time, the new areca nut price has scaled new high. Ink the Campco market, for the first time, this areca nut commanded price of Rs 273 to 275 per kg.

Normally, areca nut prices are quoted for new and old nuts. Once the new areca nut enters the market in October, prices start being quoted for new areca nut, single chol (new) and double chol (old). Normally, the new areca nut commands a price between Rs 180 to 220 per kg, but this year's price has brought smiles on the lips of the farmers.

Areca prices had reached Rs 350 two months back, and almost all the stock with farmers was sold at that time. In north India too, the demand has gone up. As the demand far exceeds the sources, the price of areca nuts is going up.

At the Campco market, the price of new areca nut commanded price of Rs 275 per kg while the new areca nut (single chol) got price of Rs 360 and old areca (double chol) stood firm at Rs 400. In the open market too, new areca nut got a price of Rs 275, Rs 365 to 375 for single chol and 395 to 399 for old areca nut (double chol).
