Mangaluru, Oct 12: Observing that during the last three decades, the medical field, which should have remained a field of service, has been allowed to be commercialised, a protest demonstration was held today in front of the city corporation office at Lalbagh here.

The protesters, in a representation made to city (south) MLA, D Vedavyas Kamath, noted that the private hospitals, which are opened in the name of service, convert the same into business with the passage of time. At the same time, successive governments have neglected public health services and government hospitals suffer from a lack of specialised doctors, quality treatments, non-availability of medicines etc. The number of government hospitals and doctors is woefully short of the government's own norms, they pointed out. They also said that the government Wenlock Hospital which should have been turned into a government medical college, is being used by medical colleges for clinical training.

The representation, signed by leader, Santhosh Bajal, said that protest demonstration is being held in front of the offices of all the legislators in the district demanding the strengthening of the government health system and urging the MLA to ensure that health services are provided and government hospitals are strengthened as per the rules of the government.
