Mangaluru, Oct 13: State president Youth Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) Varun Kumar urged district administration for renewal of sand licence which has been stopped since 12 months.

Addressing media here on Tuesday October 13, Varun Kumar said, "Since 12 months, Dakshina Kannada district is facing acute shortage of sand and licence has not been renewed which made way for irregularities and corruption in movement of sand. Due to the unavailability of sand, it has severely affected the coolie workers, engineers and contractors."

He further said, "There are lot of irregularities taking place pertaining to sand. Sand which has to be available at Rs 6,000 are now available at Rs 20,000. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel is giving unscientific statements that sand will be available at Rs 2,000. We demand for the renewal of sand licence or else Youth INTUC will stage protest until justice is made. The district administration should take steps to stop sand related irregularities."

“Due to unavailability of sand, several construction works have been stopped which has affected the coolie workers, engineers, contractors etc. The engineers and contractors association have kept their demand regarding sand but their demands have been neglected. The associations have planned for a protest very soon,” said Dinaker Shetty, state general secretary, Youth INTUC.

District president Youth INTUC Chiranjeevi Anchan, South Youth INTUC president Puneeth Shetty, former mayor Kavitha Sanil and others were present.
