Udupi: Elderly lady visits clinic for treatment, loses Rs 87,000 worth ornaments to conman

Udupi, Oct 13: A stranger conned an elderly lady who had visited a doctor’s clinic for treatment and decamped with her gold ornaments worth Rs 87,000 here.

Saroja (63), resident of Santur village, Mudarangadi, Karkala on October 12 had visited the clinic of Dr Sandesh Shetty for treatment of her back pain.

Meanwhile, a stranger who arrived at the clinic introduced himself to her as Rajesh, son of Ramanna Bhandary. He said that Karnataka Bank where he is employed is donating Rs 17,000 to the poor and he will make her get the amount. He took the woman to Mitra hospital. When they went inside the hospital, he told her that the bank people will not give the amount of Rs 17,000 if she is wearing gold. He asked her to remove her bangles saying that he will keep them in the bag.

The conman made her sit there and never returned. Saroja opened her bag after a while and found that her gold bangles worth Rs 87,000 were missing. A case under crime No 98/2020 IPC section 420 is registered at Udupi town police station in this connection.
