Puttur, Oct 16: Home Guards began operations here about 30 years ago. The fact that it does not have own site and building, has been hampering the service activities of the organisation. It cannot hold meetings. In urgent circumstances, thy used to depend on the temples, shrines and halls for such purposes. Now they have approached Puttur MLA for sanctioning own building for Home Guards.

Home Guards is an independent body that operates under the government. In emergency cases, it provides services. Home Guards volunteers have been working by joining hands with the policemen, fire brigade and regional transport office.

Home Guards had a room in a part of the building at the spot where the mini Vidhana Soudha stands now. After the mini Vidhana Soudha was built, Home Guards functioned in rented buildings before returning to the old municipal building. As new municipal administrative office is being built at the spot where the municipality building stood, the old building has been demolished and the Home Guards do not have a proper location to function from.

District commandant of the Home Guards Muralimohan Choontar, met MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor, and requested him for a site for the Home Guards. He drew the MLA's attention that about a thousand home guards spread over 15 units are functioning here and in Puttur, about 60 home guards personnel are actively involved with their work.

The MLA said that a separate site would be set aside for the Home Guards as per their request. He said that effort would be made to give a site in the heart of the city after which the Home Guards have to provide documents at the district level. He said that steps will be taken to sanction grants for the building.
