Mangalore: St Aloysius College Issues Clarification on Course Derecognition

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, May 11: Through a press release issued by Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society, which runs St Aloysius College here, its secretary, Fr Leo Periera, has requested the people not to get unduly apprehensive at the decision of Mangalore University not to recognize some of its postgraduate courses.

The society said it does not intend to violate rules, regulations and statutes of the university, pointing out that the college has its own academic council, governing body and other bodies as prescribed. It noted that these bodies have representatives of the university, state government, University Grants Commission, experts in the field of education and other eminent personalities.

The secretary of the society added that proposals had been submitted to the university sufficiently in advance, after following prescribed procedures. Wherever problems had cropped up, they were discussed with the university and state government. The college moved the High Court, when the dispute over payment of registration fee remained unresolved, he explained.

“The university had been approached for affiliation for these postgraduate courses six months in advance, and the state government had directed the university to grant affiliation. However, the committee that visited the college after nearly two years, recommended for the derecognition of the courses on the basis that regular, qualified teachers were not appointed for the courses, facilities are not provided and standard had not been maintained,” the release said.

While terming the above observations as not true, the society said that it would do everything possible through various platforms to solve this problem.

It looks like Mangalore University is trying to tarnish the famous college image, in a broad sense.

But inside souces from Mangalore University say that Aloysius College standard has gone down in teaching, values, in teacher's credentials, teaching standards etc. Also that College fails to send proper reports to University reg fee collection, number of students etc. Also, that high fees and donations collected go without proper management and accountabilty. Number of students present in college do not tally with what is registered with University. And this practice has been going on for quite sometime now.
There can not be smoke without fire somewhere, it looks like.
Why should innocent students suffer with these systems?

I think St Aloysius college should Issuse their own degree certificates whether the Mangalore University likes it or not. Mangalore University is Playing with the lives of the students. I think it was better off when it was under Mysore University. I also think a CBI enqury is required to find out the wrong doing's of Mangalore University

Rules are Rules and they need to be complied whether 130 years old or one year old. As I see it, St. Aloysius, of late is gradually de-generating in its values. The institution, like others seems to be chasing money than uphold the ideals of its founder fathers. Absolutely un-convincing are the clarifications offered by the college authorities, it is sad that the present administration has brought this migty institution to dis-repute.

First and foremost, me proud to be an Aloysian.
similar dirty games of derecognition etc were being played around during the early days of Fr. Muller Medical College, mainly to tranish their image. some newspapers used to display such news prominently, and a purposeful basis.
The Catholic board of Education was taken to task for declaring a day's holiday, to protest against the atrocities in Kandhamal, Orissa. There has been a clear and a systematic pattern over the years.
whosoever has any hidden agenda against catholic institutions, i just remind them of what St. Peter said to the Sanhedrin "we cant stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard"
NO ONE can dampen our spirits. You (whosoever you are), can crush us, but not our spirit.
Above all, (as the salman khan foundation is ) BE HUMAN.

Siddarth, it is your turn to grow up! Support need to be mutual! Here it is biased politics!! Yard stick need to be the same! Why some one need to support the govt having different yard sticks? In DK for an Aloysian he gets one time food for free!! Can you bet the same with other institutions? I have been a lecturer in Mangalore university. I know the situation beyond what you mean!! Do not argue with std of St. Aloysius!! It is like teaching father...You will not win VS Aloysius on religion basis. An Aloysian is beyond religion!! He will always stand for values!! Today people are trying to disperse integrity by many methods! this is one of the kind!!!

Its good that the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society has issued a clarification. Its an irony of our times that a 120 year old institution has to be granted permission by a 30 year old university. To get over these anamolies the society should trust in the Lord and a good lawyer.

The Education Ministry has to look into this as the Students who are the future of our Country cannot waste their time and effort. The qualified students should receive their Certificates on time so that they may proceed with their future plans.

It is ironic that a University which operated from the campus of St. Aloysius in its early years, finds faults with the very same institution.

It is ironic for the PG students who have paid for the seats and education at St.Aloysious but still did not get their degree certificates. It looks like Aloysian Mgt must have denied to grease the palms of certain people around Mangalore University, hence this threats & harassment of derecognition of PG Courses.

Mangalore University should know that St.Aloysius is one of best of the Institutions recognized all over the world and it used to be a dream come true to many who qualified from this great institution of repute. There was a time that imparting Education was a noble cause and profession & was considered as 'Vidhyadaana".Now thanks to our government and politicians and their corrupt policies, the Education is become one of the most corrupt and lucrative business exploiting the students, especially those coming from poor and middle income groups.

Time for intervention by the UGC and Ministry of Education to resolve the issue and save the future & aspirations of hundreds of Students. "O Lord Lead them All from Darkness to Light".

Mangalore University has a tendency of strict evaluation of exam papers & awarding less marks. I dont say the MU should be lenient in awarding the marks. While seeking employment we lose out at the first hurdle or compelled to appear for entrance exams (CA, ICWA etc). Because of this Manglore Students are losing seats for higher education, jobs etc. Even though students are smart, because of the percentage of marks we lack behind. First impression is the best impression, some times our bio-data's were not considered because of the percentage. Can any one make them understand real fact what is happening out side the Manglore University Campus????

We all know the impeccable credentials and high standards of St Aloysius College which date back to more than 130 years. We are also fully aware of how notorious Mangalore University has become in the recent past for leaked questions papers, corrupt staff, etc. It appears that kickbacks were not paid to the appropriate people at the Mangalore University and hence the de-recognition and harassment. I only hope that this issue will be resolved soon so that innocent students do not suffer.

    Proud to be a Aloysian

Let alone St. Aloysius college and I think this is one of the best not only in Mangalore but all in India.

The reputation this college has is unbelievable and being graduated from this college makes me proud to be known as Aloysian.

I think we should not make an issue of this whole episode and the statement issued by the college management is good enough.

Kindly note that st aloysius started imparting education in the 1890s and Mangalore Univewrsity came into picture in 1980s. How can Mangalore University say that standard of education is not maintained at St Aloysius? Kindly note that St Aloysius has history of quality education. Let Mangalore University tell us what is autonomy.

It looks like University is harassing the St.Aloysius College of great reputation. St.Aloysius College existed much before Mangalore University and has a better standing in the world than the University itself. It should soon become autonomous university.

Nice to hear about the clarification given by St Aloysius College. It brings a lot of relief to us. But changing the evaluation system so drastically may have created all the said problems. There is always resistance to change and change should evolve and not explode.   Please see to it that the students do not suffer.
I heard the MBA students who finished their course one year back not yet received their convocation certificate. What can they do for job?
