Mangalore, May 19: State rural development and panchayat raj minister, Jagadish Shettar, said that the government is planning to draw help from Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in its endeavour to find out water sources to solve drinking water woes. He was speaking after presiding over the progress review meeting of the rural development and panchayat raj department held in the auditorium of the zilla panchayat here on Tuesday May 18.

Shettar said that he plans to create a separate department of engineers to find out water sources and use them to the optimum level, and that he has already held discussions on this subject with the Chief Minister a number of times. He felt that the result got from the bore wells being dug under a scheme with central-state participation, has not been satisfactory.

Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat president, Santosh Kumar Bhandary, suggested for erecting check dams across the rivers of the district at several places, to augment the water sources. Zilla panchayat chief executive officer, P Shivahsnkar, said that the district needs about Rs 54 crore for taking up the work of enrichment of water sources through V-Wire Technology, saying that the experiments undertaken for augmenting water table through this technology in dried up bore wells of Munnoor and Kolnad gram panchayats in the district have given encouraging results.

MLAs, Ramanath Rai and U T Khader, district in – charge minister, Krishna J Palemar, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, zilla panchayat vice president, Jagannath Salian and several others were present.

Addressing a press conference later, Shettar said that the government will soon appoint ombudsmen to investigate complaints of irregularities in the works being executed in the districts, and to ensure quality in such works. He said that under the scheme, retired judges, who would be appointed as ombudsmen in each district, will be given powers to hold inquiries and punish the guilty, in cases of complaints of irregularities in the execution of various works. He also said that the government has plans to film the progress of government works through the satellite, to put a stop to the practice of drawing bills without executing works.

Why are we wasting money and resources of the world why cant we just do a simple start with making water harvesting mandatory for new buildings, we all know that dakshina kannada dist gets the highest amount of rain in the region imagine if we harvest that water and use the same how much of cost will we save per litre, check out other districts in shimoga there are over 71 houses with water harvesting facility which even attracted the attention of discovery channel,

Please stop wasting water and digging borewels day is not far when the underwater table will run dry pls use and recycle water(sewage treatment), we should even know the panchayath know abt how much of water do they waste the delay they make for a simple water leak on the road side
i would only say God save the World before it runs out of resources

Mr Shettar, Why are you planning to loot tomorrows generations wealth. Make it mandatory for water harvesting. Also compulsory recycling of grey water and black water in Al industrial units for gardening purposes. Also madate that all 5 star hotels have in built Laundry with water recycling.
Also plan de salination units with the latest technologies like membrane osmosis.
Just drilling holes to under aqueifiers is not going to solve your problem. Mandate a Outlet and Inlet metering sytem for both fresh water consumption and sewage discharge of all domestic and industrial connections.
Make it Mandatory for al Industrial units to have their own water treatment and recyling plants and not borrow from cities drinking water supply.
Providing potable water is water infested with coliform basteria but water with biological count less than 2PPM. Very important invest in long lasting pipes which corode less. Hve good valve rlease system with prudent over head tanks to maintain pressure at a end user level of at least 25 meters from ground level.

Good thought that we should solve Drinking Water Problem in our city. But I just wish to express my view point on the solutions given or rather involvement of ISRO.
With due respect to ISRO, let us keep in mind following :

    01. like in olden days, why dont we have local dams built at regular intervals of the flowing rivers, which increase water level in close by wells of those rivers.

    02. why dont we make water harvesting mandatory for new building that come up now, may it be residential houses or complexes, or even big big malls. This method increases the water level and creates water beds in the soil. Rotary has taken initiative in this project & results have been encouraging so far. Even the houses which are interested in taking up this project, should be guided.

    03. we should have a proper water supply facility from the water reservoirs to the cities. the pipelines should be upgraded, and same should be laid well with co-ordination with road works. Coz what we see is that once road is completed it is dug again to lay some pipe lines?? have a proper co-orinated working system.

    04. the concerned water department should take enough interest to maintain the pipelines in order, check on leakages on roadsides and elsewhere. What we observe is that whenever there is a water leakage, even if we bring it to the notice of corporators or so, no immediate action is taken. What a national wastage of water..
Let us get to the grass root level to solve our problems.
