Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, May 26: A few thieves took away the automated teller machine (ATM) of HDFC Bank located at Chandapur Road in Anekal town in the district at around midnight of Monday May 24. Even though the bank officials are yet to assess the actual loss, based on the information that the agency concerned had placed cash amounting to Rs 16 lac in the ATM on Monday, it is assumed that it contained about Rs 14 lac in different denominations at the time it was taken away.

The closed circuit cameras could not properly catch the pictures, as the thieves switched off the lights immediately after coming in. Two persons with helmets on were seen in the camera footage, removing the machine in the darkness, making their identification impossible. Bank manager, Kartik, said that the number of thieves involved will be known only after proper investigation. Reportedly, the two guards on duty at the nearby bank branch and the ATM were fast asleep inside the bank premises and this opportunity was encashed by the thieves. The incident occurred after 1 pm, the time at which a policeman on beat duty had signed the register kept near the bank.

The management of ATMs of HDFC Bank is outsourced to an agency. The ATM is believed to weigh around 400 kgs, and it is thought that it was dragged away from the spot.

Superintendent of police (SP), Mahesh, deputy SP, Shankarappa, circle police inspector, H S Venkatesh and others visited the spot.
