Beijing, Jan 8 (IANS): China's National Health Commission on Friday said that there were 53 new cases detected in the mainland, of which 37 were locally transmitted and the rest 16 arrived from outside.
Of the 37 locally transmitted cases, 33 were reported in Hebei, two in Liaoning, and one each in Beijing and Heilongjiang, Xinhua news agency quoted the Commission as saying in its daily update.
The 16 new imported cases were reported, including eight in Shanghai, three in Guangdong, and one each in Liaoning, Jiangsu, Fujian, Henan, and Hunan.
No new suspected cases or deaths were reported on Thursday.
With the new cases, China's overall infection tally reached 87,331, while the death toll stood at 4,634.
