Udupi: Farmers Concerned Over Peacock Menace in Farms

Udupi: Farmers Concerned Over Peacock Menace in Farms

Udupi, Jun 11:
There was a time when the glimpse of national bird peacock was quite rare to the coastal residents as they were mostly confined to their hilly forest habitat. Enthusiasts either enjoyed its beauty in zoos or at protected forests.

But over the years, deforestation has forced these peacocks to venture into the farmlands across the undivided Dakshina Kannada district.

They come to the farm mainly in search of food for survival. Owing to the peacock menace, the farmers are unable to harvest their crop because there is hardly anything left in the farmlands.

Although the people who come from other states enjoy viewing the influx of peacocks in many flocks, especially during the onset of monsoon season, the farmers try not to undertake farming.   The Wildlife authorities need to somehow solve this problem and think of an alternative arrangement.

Now these peacocks become common like other birds in the coastal region. We can found them in each and every place of coastal region. Earlier we used go to Mysoor zoo to see the peacocks now we can found them in our yard itself. As the deforestation is going in the Malnad region in the name of mining, industrialization, etc.. These peacocks found our calm & quiet coastal region as their shelter. Also they are getting good respect from our coastal people as no is harming these birds intentionally. Only worry is they are destroying the crops of our poor farmers. Because of the wrong deeds by our rich miners and industrialists poor farmers are suffering.

when human beings encroach the lands/ habitation of wild animals/ birds, where they can go for their survival? they have to come to human habitats/ farm lands. Poor birds no alternative for their existence, god only save them from greedy human beings.

Not TRUE! I disagree with your statement "There was a time when the glimpse of national bird peacock was quite rare to the coastal residents as they were mostly confined to their hilly forest habitat. Enthusiasts either enjoyed its beauty in zoos or at protected forests". Refer Ravi Lobo's special featured articles on Daiji he quotes in his teenage day's when he used to be involved in church activities, the father would go after those farmers who had poisoned peacocks to avoid peacock menace and advise them not to kill the national bird.

I think all of us forgot the "menace" part of the peacock and enjoyed the visual treat. Simply enchanting! When nature is becoming scarcer day by day these days, tit-bits stolen from her womb of this kind leaves the spectator spellbound. Mr.Hemanath Padubidri, "thoda aur ho jaye". Thank you.

It is simple, I love this birds and they are in plenty these near my parents house. Just grow more fruit bearing trees and allow empty spaces near the water front and they will live on it. I have experience this in my farm and the damages can be minimum. We must al appreciate one thing tat, peacocks are the best natural anti reptile and rodent and if we kill erradicate peacocks we there will be many who is going to lose life due to snake bites as you know due to deforestation there are lots of snakes in human habite.

Hats off to Hemanath Padubidri for the pictorial report.

True, peacocks are a visual delight & rare sight, especially in coastal region.

While city-dwellers & children enjoy this rare sight, I know it is a nightmare to the farmers especially when these feathered creatures play havoc & even destroy crops.

Just as man has encroached into forest lands & the natural habitats of the wild creatures, they in turn have started invading the human habitants. Similar is the case with wild elephants or even deers.

Obviously, something needs to be done so man & nature as well as the creatures of forest can co-exist without becoming a threat to each other. I don't know what can be done. But the authorities concerned must wake up & try to find a practical, effective solution.
