Udupi, Jan 30: As part of the 'Cervical Cancer Awareness' month, the department of Surgical Oncology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal has organized an awareness talk on January 29 at Shirdi Sai Baba OPD Block.

Oncology nurses, Akhila Shetty and Pushpalatha gave awareness talks on the importance of cervical cancer screening and prevention. After the talk, there was an interactive session, where the oncologists answered all the doubts and questions of the public.

Naveena Kumar, the associate professor, and head of the department of Surgical Oncology said, “January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a great time to talk about how screening and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines can help to prevent cancer. Cervical cancer was once the leading cause of cancer in women in India. With better awareness, we can initiate the elimination of this cancer."

Dr Nawaz Usman, Dr Keshavarajan, Dr Preethi Shetty, assistant professors of Surgical Oncology were present.

Cervical cancer tends to occur during the midlife of women. Cancer typically occurs in women who do not receive regular screening. Screening detected early cancers can be fully cured.

Medical superintendent, Dr Avinash Shetty said, “Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre (MCCCC) at Kasturba Hospital with full-fledged departments of Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Paediatric Oncology, Palliative Medicine and Nuclear Medicine provide comprehensive care for cancers. The centre has all facilities for screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and rehabilitation services for cervical cancers. I would urge the public to make use of the facilities and help in our mission to eliminate this deadly cancer.”
