Mangalore: MSEZ Distances Itself from Gregory Patrao Land Controversy

Media Release

Mangalore, Jun 25: Through a press release dated June 22, 2010, Mangalore Special Economic Zone Ltd (MSEZ) has expressed surprise at the fact that its name is being needlessly dragged into the issue concerning the acquisition of land belonging to Gregory Patrao.

It has pointed out that Gregory Patrao had been fighting a dogged court battle against the acquisition of his land by Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board for Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) since 1996, when MSEZ was never in the picture. The company has pointed out that following the losing of the court cases by Gregory, the authorities had acquired his land for the III phase expansion of MRPL.

MSEZ suspects that the name of MSEZ was dragged into the picture due to the handiwork of vested interests and some directionless NGOs, driven by their own agenda, under the pretext of coming to the aid of Patrao.

As regards the patrons of artists ganging up against MSEZ, the release has pointed out that this has become old hat. Advising the concerned to adopt a ‘progressive’ subjects that being ‘regressive’, it said that the ‘modern oil paint’ used by the artists in some cases, is derived as a by-product of refineries, against which they are now agitating.

One can just imagine the extent of corruption with the KIADB at the helm of the process of acquisition of land. No other proof is required!!

The fact of the matter is KIADB, MSEZ and MRPL are hand in glove which is christal clear.

Under the RTI, can someone which are the companies going to come up in this area? Why the respective companies do not approach the farmers directly and offer the same compensation which they are ready to pay to the KIADB?

Everything is fishy here! We don't want this can of worms!!

KIADB is the epicenter of corruption and money laundering link between industrialists and politicians. KIADB Act allows the notification to remain valid for decades and even ceturies they do no expire. It can take over lands by force without even paying the compensation. There is no compulsion for rehabilitation of the affected. All these are totally against the very spirit of the democratic system and hence KIADB must be dessolved.

The problems for the farmers in Permude, Kalavar, Bajpe and the surrounding villages stated because MSEZ wants land for Phase1 and Phase 2. All the lands of the farmers is being acquired just because MSEZ wants the land. The lands of kudumbi tribals was forcibly acquired and even their wells were acquired and lands leveled using bulldozers, electric connections of pump sets removed. All the daivas and sacred stones were uprooted and shifted. All farmers in these areas are threatened by hired goons. The Press is silenced by showing the bait of Big advertisements. All types of methods are used by MSEZ to deceive the public. As a lot of money is involved there are lot of vested interests. Now they say that they are not in the picture and KAIDB is the villain. It is the right time for the MSEZ to withdraw and close Phase 2 and save the farmers.

On April 24, 2007 KIADB handed over to MSEZ authorities possession certificate of lands in various surveys of Permude and Kalavar villages, measuring 171.34 acres. This list of survey numbers shows Gregory Patrao's property also. How can MSEZ say that its "name is being needlessly dragged"
when KIADB acquired and handed over land on paper to MSEZ?

KIDB has acted with selfish motives, robbing the grounds of farmers and local habitants without providing due compensation and then selling the same land for than 15 to 25 times what they paid, in additon to robbing brokerage fees from the people.

Worst yet, their cronies collected huge sums as brokerage fees from the compensation owed to the farmers and habitants as a condition of signing "release" documents. What sort of lawlessness is this?

KIDB engaged in unwarranted reckless unlawful actions against the farmers with promises, yet to be fulfilled. Mr. Patrao's stuggle is a national symbole of civil action promoted by our founding fathers, M.K. Gandhi.

My recommendation is that the the court in it's justice shall impose requirements for just compensation and restitution, so that the normal life-style of uprooted people can be resumed. Contrary to that is no different than the Communists taking over the property by force, like that happend in China.

India must prosper and advance but lawfully, preserving the rights of the people and respecting the Constition of the Country. KIDB and MRPL contain elements of currpuction, looting the rightfull properties of local people at under-market price, with empty promises. It is time that both KIDB and MRPL clense themseleves of the unlawful activities and promote just casue due process in the acqisition of land.

The Response given by the MSEZ, is childish, foolish and only an attempt to divert the issues raised by the artists. Artist are raising a very legitimate issue and are placing it before the society. We need our land, water, for our future generations. Let the farce played by MSEZ that they are providing employment and economic status of the region will improve be stopped.

Artists are painting the societies concern and art has been there since human being was there. It is wrong to say artist are using the oil colour produced by the bye product of the refinery. If it is so artist would not like to paint at the cost of displacing farmer from the land given by his forefathers. Thousands of people can be employed in a few acres and we do not need to give thousands of acres to give us employment.

Let the SEZ not become a deamon to the locals but a blessing. Our district has given the country one of the most non polluting industry- Banking. Let MSEZ think about getting that kind of industry and not fool around people.
