MP Vijayashanti Arrested for Provocative Remarks

Hyderabad, July 3 (IANS) Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader and MP Vijayashanti was arrested Saturday for making inflammatory remarks ahead of the July 27 byelections to 12 assembly seats in Telangana, police said.

Tension prevailed near her residence in Banjara Hills as police used force to disperse TRS workers who had gathered there to resist their attempts to arrest the actress-turned-politician.

Vijayashanti, who had gone into hiding Friday after police lodged a case against her reportedly on the directions of the Election Commission, was addressing mediapersons when police reached her residence to arrest her.

TRS workers raised slogans against the police and alleged that they were biased against the party.

A police official said they would produce her before a magistrate. The Medak MP was Friday booked for promoting animosity and hatred among people.

The TRS leader, while addressing party workers a few days ago, had called upon people in Telangana to 'slay' anyone who opposed the formation of separate Telangana state.

Police had failed to arrest Vijayashanti Friday evening as TRS workers resisted them for nearly two hours. They managed to enter the house but did not find her.

The TRS leader later returned to her house and told reporters that she was not afraid of being arrested. TRS cadres had gathered in large numbers since Saturday morning to prevent her arrest.
