Udupi, Aug 4: A Samiti formed by the likely victims of proposed broadening of NH 17 along the Padubidri town held a press conference at Hotel Navarang, Padubidri, here on Wednesday August 4 afternoon.
The Samiti alleged that entire Padubidri town will likely to be razed, since shops, restaurants, banks and public utilities services are located within 28 meters of NH 17, as National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has plans to develop the highway for laying four lanes of 60 meters breadth.
The residents and shopkeepers along NH 17 at Padubidri had already filed cases against the land acquisition notification published in the gazette and also newspapers on March 23 2000.
Padubidri town has 278 shops, 15 hotels and restaurants, 50 houses, 2 community buildings, 1 worship centre, 3 clinics and hospital, 10 branches of various banks and 1 post office, thereby employing nearly 2,600 people. The Samiti alleged that entire town will likely to be razed for broadening NH 17 in Pudubidri town and that the locals are worried of their future.
Samiti urged the NHAI, to clarify their plans in this regard. The samiti also urged NHAI to lay a service road that would preserve the existing road at Padubidri; thereby saving the buildings from demolition. The samiti is committed to follow democratic methods to stage their struggle and also try legal procedures, in order to get justice for their cause, they added.
Samiti members Y Sukumar, Dr Y N Shetty, James Andrade, Vishu Kumar Shetty, Gopal Shetty, Santhosh Shetty, Dr N T Anchan, Prakash Shetty among others were present.
